The Federal Motor Carrier Service Administration (FMCSA) has introduced yet another program — a National Educational Tour — to bring commercial vehicle drivers on board with the ELD implementation mission.
With the aid of the Department of Transportation (DoT), this 5-month-6-stop national tour is taking place across the country. The objective is to educate drivers on how and why to adopt ELDs and publicize the benefits of ELDs for the trucking industry.
The program is conducted by subject-matter experts and focuses on drivers. Workshops, presentations, and panel discussions are included in the agenda. Drivers will be able to interact, ask questions, and discuss their obstacles towards a smooth ELD transition.
The FMCSA agents will provide assistance material to the carriers and drivers to learn their responsibilities and parameters under the new ELD mandate. They will also review drivers’ past performances and suggest recommendations for improving driver behavior.

About the ELD Mandate
To combat driver fatigue, driver harassment, and minimize road accidents, the FMCSA introduced the electronic logging device mandate, aka the ELD mandate.
As per the upcoming FMCSA’s ELD mandate, most CMV drivers will need FMCSA-certified and compliant ELDs after December 18, 2017, to stay legal. Although there are a few exemptions, if you maintain a record of duty status (RODS) for more than 8 days in a 30-day period, you will need compliant ELDs.

FMCSA is working hard to make the ELD implementation process as easy as possible for commercial drivers and motor carriers. The ELD mandate is expected to save nearly 26 lives and prevent 562 injuries every year. Moreover, it is also expected to save the trucking industry almost $1 billion every year through reduced paperwork.
More and more fleets are implementing ELDs with each passing day. If you haven’t started the ELD implementation process, the time is now.
